So often, during a birth, the photographer centers the lens on mother and baby, or family (as rightly they should), but we’re willing to bet that the brilliant birth photographers of the world have also captured some birth workers at work, too.
In our 2023 MW Photography Showcase, we’re shifting the standard photographic attention and focus to the Midwives, in all their grit and glory, as they bravely, and beautifully, assist and guide birther and baby to, and through, the threshold of labor and birth.
We excitedly invite photographers to “Elevate Midwifery” with us, sharing your images that center the Midwife for the tremendous life work, sacrifice, wisdom, and love they so graciously bestow on families during the birth of their child.
Photographers, search your gallery for those sacred birth photos, those hidden gems, that feature and capture Midwives working their magic, and submit to our MW Showcase for a chance to win cash, and artistic recognition within the Global Birth Community. Most importantly, however, is an opportunity for Midwives to be respected and cherished for their selfless service, during birth and beyond.

Midwives, this is the category for all your iPhone shots between births, at peer review, in the car, candids of each other sleeping, charting, giggling and otherwise living #midwifelife from the inside! We trust you to get permissions to share, so please do. These are NOT professional photos but rather photos on your phone for a behind the scenes look at the power, pain, and poignancy of midwifing! (yes, you can submit photos of yourself)
Images were judged by a panel that included Midwives, Student Midwives, Doulas, Birth Photographers, Mothers and Birthing persons. Images will be judged on a scale of 1-5 (five being the highest) on the following criteria:

Ali has been a birth worker for nearly 5 years, starting as a birth photographer, then adding doula, birth assistant, and student midwife to her journey! She is married to her awesome husband Tommy, and is mama to a whole bunch of littles (they had 4 in 4.5 years ). Ali and her family are blessed to live on a beautiful piece of land in Southern Maryland that they are slowly, but surely, turning into a sustainable homestead. Ali loves all things earthy, nature and fresh air. If she is home, she is probably sitting barefoot outside soaking up the sunshine while watching, and often helping, her kids make mudpies and play “crystal shop.” She loves fitness and nutrition, and believes in taking care of our bodies from the inside out. She’s captivated by the always shifting balance of mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. Ali is continuously seeking out wisdom on how to keep these in balance (for herself and her clients!) through mentors, fellow birth workers, trainings, courses, reading and more!
WIFE – MOM – PHOTOGRAPHER – DOULA – STUDENT MIDWIFE
Sharel is 33, mom of 3, and wife to the most supportive husband, who quit his job so she can support others on their new adventure. She is a coffee addict, and went from living Tiny on Lake Lewisville to settling in South Dallas. She enjoys art, ice cream, plants, watching Grey’s Anatomy and Survivor. She loves animals and is actually a pretty amazing portrait artist when it comes to painting. Sharel is catching babies and can’t wait to be your midwife.
